A Complete Price Guide
Indicative price ranges by safari style, budgets for 3, 5 and 7 days, what drives the price, what is usually included or excluded, and how to compare quotes fairly.
INTRODUCTION
How much does a Tanzania safari cost? It depends on how you travel, which parks you visit, where you stay and how many days you spend on safari. A budget camping safari can cost considerably less than a private safari with luxury lodges, domestic flights and exclusive wildlife experiences.
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara each offer different experiences, and the destinations you choose shape your budget. This guide explains typical prices, what a package may include, how much to budget for different trip lengths and how to avoid paying for services you do not need.
Actual prices may fall outside these ranges. The best estimate is the one calculated for your own dates, route and group size.
AT A GLANCE
For initial planning, these indicative ranges help you compare safari styles. They are estimates for organised safari packages, not guaranteed quotations.
These generally refer to safari arrangements, not the full cost of an international holiday. Flights, visas, insurance, tips and personal spending may be additional.
BY TRIP LENGTH
Longer trips usually cost more overall, although the daily average may change with the itinerary and accommodation. These are broad planning budgets from the daily ranges above (per person), not live offers.
How these were calculated. The totals multiply the indicative daily estimates by the number of days. Actual operator quotations may differ because park fees, transfers, accommodation and other costs are not always charged per day. A five-day safari to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro may have a different cost structure from five days in parks closer to Arusha, so ask for a detailed quote for your route and dates.
SAFARI STYLES
Each style suits different travellers. Compare the written inclusions, not just the label.
For travellers who want to experience wildlife while keeping accommodation and other costs under control. Often public campsites, shared departures or simpler accommodation.
May suit: backpackers, students, solo travellers willing to share, and visitors who prioritise wildlife over amenities. Facilities, privacy and flexibility may be more limited. Do not assume every low-cost safari includes all park fees.
Balances comfort, wildlife viewing and value, with permanent tented camps, comfortable lodges or hotels near the parks.
May suit: couples, families, first-timers who want comfort and value. Standards vary, so check lodge names, location, room type and meals, and how many nights are in or near the parks.
Premium accommodation, personalised service and a more exclusive experience, sometimes with domestic flights to reduce long road transfers.
May suit: honeymooners, photographers wanting a tailored plan, special occasions. Prices vary a lot, so check whether flights, drinks, private activities and concession or activity fees are included.
WHAT AFFECTS PRICE
Understanding them helps you compare packages fairly.
Depend on destination, visitor category, age, activities and the applicable tariff. TANAPA publishes park tariffs and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority publishes its own. Do not use an old fee table as a current quotation.
Often the biggest difference. A public campsite, simple lodge, tented camp and luxury lodge sit at different price points, and properties in sought-after areas may charge more.
Vehicle costs are shared. A couple travelling privately may pay more per person than a larger group on the same route. Shared safaris vary in availability, dates and flexibility.
June to October is popular for general wildlife viewing; January and February suit calving in the southern Serengeti. Popular areas book early. Quieter periods may offer options, but savings are not guaranteed.
More days mean more accommodation, meals, guiding and transport, though the daily average varies with the balance of park days and transfer days.
Road safaris may be cheaper; domestic flights save time and reach remote areas but add cost, with strict baggage limits and extra transfers.
Balloon safaris, guided walking safaris where permitted, cultural visits, authorised night drives and specialist birding or photography may be extra.
Check which activities are included and which need separate payment before you compare quotes.
POPULAR DESTINATIONS
Both are major stops on the Northern Safari Circuit, and each has its own cost drivers.
Vast grasslands, predators and the Great Wildebeest Migration. The cost depends on nights, accommodation area, season and whether you go by road or air. A short trip may cost less overall, but reaching the park and arranging accommodation can make even a brief visit a significant expense.
Ask your operator:
For the Migration, ask for an area suited to your dates. Herds follow rainfall and grazing, so no sighting is guaranteed.
Serengeti guideDramatic crater scenery and a wide variety of wildlife. The total depends on accommodation, route, vehicle arrangements and the applicable conservation and crater-related charges.
A quote should explain whether it includes:
Ngorongoro has its own fee structure: ask for a current itemised quotation rather than assuming a general national park fee covers everything.
Ngorongoro guidePARK FEES
Sometimes they are and sometimes not, and it is one of the most important details to check. Even an “all-inclusive” package should have a written list of exactly what is covered.
Use official sources alongside your operator’s quote: TANAPA for park tariffs and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority for its visitor tariffs.
WHAT’S EXCLUDED
Some expenses are paid separately. A written list of exclusions helps prevent unexpected costs.
Flights from your home country are often not included in a land safari package.
Requirements and fees depend on your nationality and circumstances. Check official immigration information.
Make sure your policy covers the activities you plan to do.
Practices vary. Ask your operator for guidance rather than assuming tips are included.
Balloon safaris and other specialist experiences may be charged separately.
Souvenirs, laundry, extra drinks and other purchases add to your budget.
An extra night before or after the safari may be needed depending on your flights.
Flights, accommodation, activities and destination-specific requirements may be separate from your mainland package.
SAVE MONEY
A memorable safari does not require the most expensive package. These strategies help manage your budget without compromising what matters.
If you are comfortable sharing a vehicle, ask whether a suitable group departure is available. Shared vehicle costs may reduce what each traveller pays.
Too many parks increase transport costs and leave less time for wildlife viewing. Pick the destinations that matter most.
Look at the actual properties in each quotation. A well-located comfortable lodge may offer better value than a pricier property that needs longer transfers.
If dates are flexible, compare quotations for different periods, and check availability and expected weather before choosing a lower-priced one.
Compare several detailed quotations and verify credentials, recent reviews and payment terms. A low advertised price is not necessarily the lowest final cost.
Request separate details for accommodation, transport, park fees, meals, transfers and optional activities to spot genuine differences.
Choose the activities you care about. A well-planned game drive can be rewarding even without paid extras.
Often yes per person when only one or two travel, because vehicle and guide costs are split among fewer people. In return you get more flexibility over stops, pace and itinerary, subject to park rules and the agreed arrangements.
Can be more economical when a suitable departure is available. You share the vehicle and follow the group’s schedule, so flexibility is lower. Compare accommodation, group size, departure date, route and inclusions, not just price.
YOUR BUDGET
Start by separating the cost into two categories.
The services offered by your operator, which may include accommodation, meals, guiding, transport and park fees.
Items that may be outside the package: international flights, visa expenses, insurance, tips, personal spending and extra accommodation.
For a more accurate estimate, decide your dates, trip length, preferred parks, accommodation standard and group size, then request an itemised quotation. A five-day safari for two in comfortable lodges will total differently from a seven-day shared camping safari or a luxury fly-in itinerary. The best estimate is the one calculated for your actual plans.
BEFORE YOU PAY
Before paying a deposit, make sure you understand what you are buying.
Get the final itinerary and inclusions in writing. It makes offers easier to compare and misunderstandings easier to resolve.
FAQ
Quick answers about Tanzania safari costs.
Indicative 2026 planning estimates for organised safaris range from around $250–$400 per person per day for budget camping to $450–$800 for mid-range travel and $850–$1,500 or more for luxury trips. Actual prices depend on the route, accommodation, season, group size and inclusions.
Using the indicative daily ranges in this guide, a five-day package could be around $1,250–$2,000 per person for budget camping, $2,250–$4,000 for mid-range travel and $4,250–$7,500 or more for luxury travel. These are planning calculations, not guaranteed quotations.
Tanzania can be a substantial travel expense, particularly when visiting popular parks with private transport and lodge accommodation. Costs can be managed through shared departures, simpler accommodation and a carefully planned route.
One option is to join a suitable shared camping safari. Compare the complete package price, including accommodation, transport, meals and applicable fees, before making a decision.
They may be included, but this depends on the operator and package. Always request written confirmation and check the current fees for your itinerary.
International flights are often excluded from land safari packages. Confirm whether your quote includes international or domestic flights, airport transfers and any extra accommodation.
It depends on your priorities. Luxury accommodation, personalised service, privacy and fly-in transfers can improve comfort and convenience, but a less expensive safari can still provide excellent wildlife experiences.
Prices depend on the destination, property, demand and travel dates. Some periods may offer more accommodation options or lower rates, but discounts are not guaranteed. Compare actual quotes for flexible dates and consider how weather may affect your plans.
PLAN YOUR BUDGET
The cost depends on the experience you want, not simply the number of days. Budget camping makes a wildlife adventure more accessible, mid-range accommodation balances comfort and value, and luxury lodges offer a more exclusive experience. Each can be rewarding when the itinerary is well planned.
Price figures are indicative planning estimates, not quotations or offers, and Safari Best does not operate safaris. Park fees, rules and prices change; confirm current details with the Tanzania National Parks Authority, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and your chosen operator before booking.
